Cerro Pedernal from Abiquiu Lake #996

Cerro Pedernal from Abiquiu Lake, New Mexico - artwork by Emily Miller
The iconic flat-topped mesa known as Cerro Pedernal rises above Abiquiu Lake in northern New Mexico. Cerro Pedernal means "flint hill" in Spanish. The Tewa name, Tsip'in, means "obsidian mountain." The mountain has been a sacred and significant site for Indigenous and Hispano communities for thousands of years.

In this late afternoon view, thick clouds gather above the mountain's silhouette, with the calm waters of Abiquiu Lake shining in the foreground. Metallic watercolor paint adds sparkle to the lake waters.
