Kindly Moon, October 2021 #913
October's full moon is known as the Hunter's Moon, Kindly Moon, Blood Moon, Travel Moon, Dying Grass Moon, Falling Leaves Moon, Birds Fly South, and First Frost Moon in various Native American and Chinese cultures.
In China, the Kindly Moon marks the third and final autumn festival of the dead in the Chinese annual cycle. It is a time for planting winter wheat and tending family graves before the deep cold of winter. The change of seasons towards rain and darkness brings life to parched earth: mushrooms sprout, mosses grow, even as leaves are falling.
Drawing of red and orange Japanese maple leaves completed in my Oregon backyard, between rain showers.
The original drawing is framed and mounted on handmade paper I created for the 1000 Moons project.
