Looking north towards Heceta Head lighthouse on the southern coast of Oregon. The iconic red-roofed lighthouse was built in 1894, and is the strongest light on the Oregon coast. Heceta Head is named after the Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta, who explored the Pacific Northwest during the late 18th century. The area was called Hltuuwis by the native Siuslaw tribes who came here to fish and hunt.
Heceta Head lighthouse is just south of Sea Lion Caves. Just below this overlook, at the base of the sheer sea cliffs, a secret cove of calm water protected by lava rock creates a lagoon playground for seals and sea lions.
Nootka Rose, a wild rose native to the west coast, is pictured blooming at the top of the cliffside overlook. Although the rose was not present at this location during my visit, it is an appropriate site for Nootka rose to grow. I added the flowers in memory of my grandmother's gardens. The original artwork is painted on heavyweight 300lb Arches watercolor paper. The painting extends fully to the paper's decorative deckle edges.
