Featured artwork in PASSAGE, solo exhibit on display thru July 25, 2025 in the Gladys Valley Marine Studies building at Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport, Oregon.

This incredible sea cave frames a view of Cascade Head on the central coast of Oregon. Accessible only for a few hours during the lowest tides of the year, the isolated, unnamed cave's wave-carved rock walls are encrusted with gooseneck barnacles, green anemones, and sea stars.

I had the privilege of visiting here during my 2021 artist residency at @sitkacenter. This place was a healing gift - wild, magical, and full of life at a time when I needed it most. My values shifted that year, and I've been catching up ever since - slowly learning how to stay kind, while no longer believing that I protect myself or anyone else by staying silent.

This was my final piece created in 2024. It has been a tough few months for me, and even more for those most vulnerable in our world. I find myself returning to my study of the moon for grounding, connection, strength. White brings light, something I have been struggling to find, to create some tiny amount of balance. White is also the color of grief in Chinese tradition. I'm grateful for the many kindnesses of the many humans who have supported and shared in this ongoing work 🖤

The past six weeks have been so heavy, with personal and global loss, and I am struggling to find light or hope for the next four years. I continue to choose kindness in every way that I can, including kindness to myself to keep on making gentle space for this grief, to honor my aunt after her passing, and to support those who are most vulnerable as I can.

Last year I talked with my aunt about social justice and change work. She was still well enough to share a hike along this local trail she had committed to maintaining, past this sweet unnamed waterfall. I sometimes question my effectiveness and struggle to believe my work makes a difference, in the face of so much continued selfishness and hate in the world. My aunt's career was dedicated to social service. She said she knew exactly what I meant, and she did not have a solution. But she eventually decided that her power lay in her continued choosing to do the right thing. And it may or may not make a difference, but she would do it anyway.

I haven't felt able to post about my art, but I have been making things, and I expect I'll share them soon.

Towards the end of my residency at @chehalemculturalcenter I pulled over on the side of the country highway between Forest Grove and Newberg and sat for a few minutes to soak in the view. I commuted to the Chehalem Cultural Center all month, and this beautiful 40-minute drive became part of my experience.

Why is it important to move slowly? This question came into my head that morning as I began my commute, and the rest of the poem accumulated during the drive. I wrote it down that day in clay slabs. This is a preview of some of the text, and highlights of my process creating the porcelain tiles using ocean mud and shells gathered from my grandparents' home place in Deer Isle Maine, and reclaimed fishing rope from Kauai.

Processing loss and connection in both places, thinking about the complicated meaning of home and homes, when the tides of family ties have shifted and "going home" becomes something we must choose to create and sustain for ourselves.
